WebAug 25, 2024 · After reassembly & checking timing ,the engine wouldn't start. After much troubleshooting I realized we had it timed 180 degrees out. We corrected this (compresion is 150 -160 psi) and it started right up, but still coughs, backfires and has blow back above high idle. The exhaust is clean at idle, but turns black as soon as you try to rev it up. WebIf the cam is in 180 degrees out, all you have to do is to install the distributor 180 degrees out also, to compensate for it. As long as you have the valves, on #1 cylinder at TDC, with no clearance between the rockers and valves and the rotor pointing to #1 terminal, on the distributor cap, the engine should at least fire. When your two timing marks are pointing both together in the middle (cam dot is down, crank dot is on top) this does in fact put the timing 180 degrees out and should have the number 6 sparkplug wire running to it on the distributor.

WebMar 2, 2024 · To test, you must first verify that it is on the compression stroke by turning the engine over by hand, with your finger over the spark plug hole, to feel the air escaping.
