Once you have all the required items head to the Smelter or Magma Smelter and you’ll be good to go. Making the fuel by using Bituminous coal will produce 9 Coke and Lignite will get you 5. WebJust making a custom stockpile will allow dorfs to haul stuff to it. If you want to ensure that your smelters only use material from that stockpile, then you need to assign the "Give to" to the smelter workshop. That way your Furnace Operators won't go wandering all over the fortress to pick up coal.
